Stags Cook Up Another WCAC Championship Win

Washington , DC - "Stay hungry and stay humble" noted Dematha junior guard Quinn Cook postgame , speaking of what his father Ted Cook would have thought about his performance last night in front of 4,000+ at Bender Arena. That is exactly what he did , tieing his career high with 30pts and leading his Dematha Stags to a 71-52 win over rival Gonzaga.

The game began with Gonzaga scoring the first five points of the game , while the purple and white faithful cheered on their Eagles , who came off a buzzer beating win against O'Connell the night before winning 61-63.  

However on the next play Cook found teammate Victor Oladipo connecting on a major alley-oop slam that shifted the momentum over to Dematha , who held on to it the rest of the game. Oladipo scored 12pts in the win and also slammed home a monster jam late in the 4th quarter putting the exclamation point on a convincing WCAC championship win , the Stags second in a row and fifth in six years.

But in between Oladipo's momentum changing plays , was a whole lot of Quinn Cook. Cook knocked down five three point shots , after the last he looked and Oladipo and smiled , as if to say that they should have known that it was going in. There is no question that the kid who plays big in big games , had the game of his career at the right time yet again. It's only adequate that the 6'0" point guard be nicknamed Quinn "Big Shot" Cook , a name I will personally tag and that he has all but earned thus far.

Tyler Thornton of Gonzaga gave a big effort for Gonzaga with 17pts in the loss. "You always got to bring your A game when playing against Tyler and Ced" smiled Cook , speaking on playing against his AAU teammates (DC Assault) but WCAC rivals.

And although Quinn had the game of his life , it was the entire Stag effort that has lifted them to an overall record of 29-3 and the area's number one ranking in the DMV. The Stags played smothering defense throuhgout the contest , junior forward Mikael Hopkins recorded a game high eight blocks , of which deflated the Eagles inside attack. "It's a testimony to Dematha as a whole" noted head coach Mike Jones , who now faces a Ballou Knights team on March 14 , 2010 for the City Title game.
