September Student Athlete Of The Month

Spencer de Mars Class Of 2009

Video: Fairfax Stars & Spencer De Mars Highlights

Spencer de Mars of Thomas Jefferson High School of Arts & Sciences in Alexandria , VA has garnished the Capitol Hoops September 2008 Student Athlete Of The Month Award. Whether on the hardwood or the classroom , Spencer is usually the center of attraction.

Spencer has been phenomenal academically. Since entering high school De Mars has maintained an accumulative 4.1gpa , and passed the SAT test with a score of 800 on both the Math and Verbal sections. Spencer has taken eight Advanced Placement classes , is a member of the National Honor Society and is the Vice President Thomas Jefferson High's Future Business Leaders Club.

Did we mention that the 6'9" big man also plays basketball? De Mars has spent the last five years of his life playing AAU basketball with the Fairfax Stars and coach Boettke , where he has developed his low post game tremendously. As a junior last season De Mars averaged 13.5ppg , 8rebs and 2.5blks en route to earning Second Team All Liberty District in Virginia.

With his play on the basketball court and commitment to excellence in the classroom , Spencer has drawn some heavy recruiting interest from some of the most prestigious institutions in the country. MIT , Dartmouth U , Swarthmore U and John's Hopkins all top his list at this time as De Mars has begun his Senior year at Thomas Jefferson HS this past August.

De Mars has had the type of high school career that many can only dream of having. His continued dedication to furthering himself not only in the gym , but his academic effort is a prime example of what a true student - athlete looks like.
