Selby's Big Effort Lifts Dematha To Rock Championship!

Josh Selby celebrates with his Mom after winning the Rock League Championship last night

Video Highlights of Dematha vs McNamara Championship Game

As competitive as the Rock League has been this summer you would hate to see it come to an end , however if you had a choice it doesn't' get much better than Dematha and McNamara meeting in the finals for a perennial WCAC rivalry game. Though it would be the Stags of Dematha who would eventually be crowned league champions defeating the Mustangs in a tough one 55-52.

Junior point guard Marcus Pilgrim nailed a big three point shot that ended the first half with with McNamara trailing 27-26 at the break. Dematha jumped off to an early second half lead thanks in big part to senior Phillip Green who knocked down his third and final three point field goal of the night , that gave the Stags some breathing room and put hem up by 6 with 15 minutes remaining. Green finished the game with 10pts.

From then on it was an all out battle ,  rising senior Talib Zanna who finshed the game with a team high 18pts , found fellow senior to be Rashad Whack(13pts) who nailed a long range three point field goal off of Zanna's steal. It is clear that Zanna has improved tremendously and is on an all out mission to prove that he is the best big man in the WCAC conference. Whack's field goal put the Mustangs ahead 47-44 with 4:02 in the second half.

Rising junior guard Josh Selby of Dematha who is regarded as one of the top point guards in the nation ,  dominated from that point on. Selby blew past Pilgrim on a dribble drive down the middle of the lane and scooped one up high off the glass above Zanna for the lay-up and the foul. He would go on to score the game's final 11 points , 17 of which came in the 2nd half , and edged all scorers with a game high 25pts. There is no question that when the game was on the line Dematha turned to Josh Selby who calmly delivered time and time again down the stretch.  After scoring the go ahead bucket off of a pick and roll from Hopkins that put Dematha on top for good , Selby looked over to his teammates with a sly smile as if to say " I got this ".  After the game Selby informed us that his mother is the reason for his success (pictured above) , and added that " I played my heart out because it was my mom's birthday."

Ms. Selby won't be the only one celebrating tonight as the Dematha Stags led by head coach Mike Jones added yet another Rock League championship to their collection. Dematha couldn't celebrate too long though , the quarterfinals of the Nike Pro City League at Coolidge High School sent the team from Hyattsville , MD scrambling quickly to their cars shortly after the game ended.
