Javorn Farrell & Chad Wilson |
As we anticipate the 2008-2009 season , we were able to satisfy some of our basketball taste buds at Riverdale Baptist HS last night in their annual Fall League. Javorn Farell or Javorn "For Real" garnished a new nickname putting on a show before a semi-occupied house at the Crusaders gymnasium in Upper Marlboro , MD. The 6'5" swingman from Riverdale Baptist (6-0) scored 18 points and 3 blocks against a scrappy Fredrick Douglass (5-3) squad who came into the game with high hopes of spoiling Riverdale's perfect record in league play.
Back to back slams for Farrell got Riverdale off to a confident start yet led only by five points at halftime. The guard play from sophomore Timmone Whatley (9pts) kept the game close as the 6'3" shooting guard attacked the cup and picked up some much needed points at the stripe for the Eagles. Senior's Chad Wilson (7pts) and Bryan Wilson (12pts) picked up the slack scoring twelve of the crusaders next fifteen points and creating some breathing room in the process. Just when when the Crusaders seemed to run away with the game junior Eric Washington knocked down a big time three ball with 22 seconds remaining to bring Douglass to within one point. Javorn " For Real " closed the game out hitting three crucial free throws to give the Crusaders a 40-37 victory over the Eagles.
" I've been up to the campus twice now and appreciate all of the love they are showing me up there " smiled Farrell , speaking of his commitment to play college basketball with the University of Massachusetts in the Atlantic 10 conference in the year 2009-2010.
Wise HS vs Thomas Stone HS
Thomas Stone High advanced their league record to 5-3 with a huge victory over Dr. Henry Wise High 50-37. The game could have went either way for the most part , then with roughly five minutes to go Thomas Stone pulled away. Junior swingman Kendall Smith led all scorers with 15pts while teammate forward Stephon Battle added 13pts in the win. Wise HS was paced by senior Delonta Boyd who kept his team close with 14pts and 7rebs.
Largo vs Northwestern
In a showdown between two Prince George's County teams , Largo edged Northwestern 33-30. Northwestern HS lost despite rallying back from 10pts with less than three minutes remaining led by junior guard Khalil Tate (11pts). Largo senior guard Maliik Thomas led all scorers with 12pts in the win.
