The Washington Catholic Athletic Conference divisional play began tonight
with the #14 ranked O'Connell Knights knocking off the #9 Gonzaga Purple
Eagles in Washington , DC by a score of 65-60.
O'Connell (4-0) came out a little flat , " I think we were shell-shocked "
noted Kendall Marshall (15pts) who caught air on his first jumper in the
very noisy Gonzaga College gym. Gonzaga junior Tyler Thornton (23pts) scored
on an O'Connell turnover and Cedrick Lindsay (18pts) knocked down two free
throws to five the Zags (2-1) an early 16-10 lead at the end of the 1st
quarter.
O'Connell would get some big time baskets from senior Dave Eismeir to open
up the second quarter. Eismeir hit two contested jump shots against a very
disciplined and smothering Gonzaga defense. The second quarter would prove
crucial to the game's outcome as the Knight went on a 22-9 run following a
Kendall Marshall steal and lay in ending the first half with O'Connell on
top 32-25.
Gonzaga came out energized beginning the second half , with junior Malcolm
Lemmons scoring on a tough hook shot over O'Connell sophomore Larry Savage.
The Lemmons basket got the Zags within three with 2:22 reaming in the third
quarter. The two teams traded baskets on both sides , and a big time three
pointer from Gonzaga junior Cedric Lindsay (18pts) caught all -net as the
Zags continued down three as time expired in the 3rd.
The Purple Eagles finally tied the game off Tyler Thornton's lay-up off a
Lindsay assist , 50-50 with just under four minutes remaining in the game.
That would be as close as Gonzaga would get the rest of the way.
Dave Eismeir scored five straight points , knocking down a crucial deep ball
from a Kendall Marshall set-up and dish to stretch the lead to 59-54 with
two minutes to play. A Thornton lay-in and two O'Connell turnovers on
inbounds sets gave Gonzaga a chance to win the game. However the Zags
couldn't convert , sending junior Devin Cole of O'Connell to the stripe.
Cole (5pts) knocked down both free throws that put the game out of reach.
