DC Assault Take Your Best
Shot Final Thoughts
CapitolHoops.Com would
like to personally thank Damon Handon
and the DC Assault organization for all of their help this weekend and
for bringing together the best players in our area in one building at
the Hoop Magic tournament in Chantilly VA.
Michael Beasley was
in the house supporting his old team along with
Austin Freeman.
Wally Judge
from Arlington Country Day in FL is a dunking machine as we witnessed
dunk after dunk , in fact it seems that he dosen't even know how to lay
the ball up. The All-Met Guard
Rodney McGruder
won the championship game MVP honors and was terrific all tournament
long. DC Assault 17 Gold got some big play from
Javon Farell of
Riverdale Baptist , Darryl Tranham
of Vance HS , Chrsitian Webster
of Landon HS and Tamir Jackson
of St. Benedicts HS. The Runner Up DC Blue Devils looked like a college
team with their size and got some collegiate players as well. I was most
impressed with the Class of 2010 point guard
Markel Starks from
Georgetown Prep, who in my opinion is the best pure point guard in the
area for 2010. Mouphatou Yarou
from Massanutten Military School is a beast down low and is a force to
be reckoned with. Stuart
Clarke who
recently transferred from Newtown HS in Baltimore , MD to Friendship
Collegiate Academy class of 2009 can really fill it up.
Chaun Duffy , Joston Thomas
and Given Kalipinde
had a great tournament for the Blue Devils as well.
Isaiah Armwood from
Montrose Christian class of 2009 was phenomenal and showed why many
believe him to be the top prospect in our area. WPC Elite lost in the
semi's to the DC Blue Devils , despite 17pts from
Isaiah Armwood
and 16pts from Alex Jackson
from Randallstown HS in Baltimore , MD.
Terrell Vinson played well but was quiet
in the semifinals against the DC Blue Devils only scoring 9pts. The
Tournament was one of the most competitive that I have witnessed with
all games very close and most down to the wire. From Springbrook high
school's state championship team we witnessed a rising star in
Jamal Olasewere who
was very impressive this weekend. The 16 & Under Champions DC Assault
Gold were led by Josh Hairston
of Courtland HS. The 6'8 PF from the class of 2010 is going to be a big
time player next season. Max Esho
6'7" WF/PF surprised us with his shooting on the perimeter , and
ability to score. DC Assault Gold 16's are the most unselfish team who
play really well as a unit. The floor leader
Tyler Thornton
played well and MVP Cedrick Lindsay
raised his stock as well. We also saw Erik
Atkins who had a solid tourney. The DC
Blue Devils 16's were led by Louis Young
6'2" PG from Good Counsel HS in the class of 2010. Louis gets everyone
involved and is a true point guard. Young injured himself scoring the
game winning shot against the Tim Thomas Playaz in the semifinals and
sat out the championship game against DC Assault Gold.
Brendan McFall of
Poolesville HS provided some outside shooting for the DC Blue Devils and
looks to be a pretty good prospect in the class of 2010.
Kendall Smith 6'4"
SG from Thomas Stone HS was the spark for DC Assault Blue 16 & Under.
Kevin Smith
the 6'1" SG freshman from Freedom Academy looked great. The kid is a
flat out scorer who averaged 21ppg for Team Melo 16's this weekend.
Zaid Heasrt
6'5" PF from Bethesda Chevy Chase HS class of 2010 played strong for the
Washington Shock 16's. The 15 & Under Division won by the Tim
Thomas Playaz of NJ defeated the MD Bulls 75-70 in the championship
game. Tyler Hubbard
scored 15 points in the second half but it wasn't enough. The MD Bulls
defeated DC Assault 15 & Under lead by
Chris Martin class
of 2011 St. Johns HS in DC. Chris Martin
started on Varsity last year as a freshman and looks to elevate his game
next season. Dante Stokes
and Melvin Robinson
also provided a scoring punch for the MD Bulls.
Alex Bates 6'7" PF
from St Johns with DC Assault 15's has a lot of potential and will be a
future force. James Robinson
6'1" PG in the class of 2012 played 16&under and looked great. He is
going to Dematha Catholic HS next year.
Kris Jenkins , the youngest player in the
tournament scored 20 points as he led Assault 14's over the DC Blue
Devils 15 & Under squad led by Julian
Dubose.
Jenkins 6'5" WF is only in the 7th grade
and has tremendous upside but is undecided on what high school he will
attend. The 14 & Under Champion DC Blue Devils defeated Team Melo 61-60
behind 25 points from AD
5'10" SG of the DC Blue Devils. Despite scoring 22pts
Cyrus Jones of Team
Melo 14's lost a tough one to the Blue Devils. The 1st Annual DC Assault
tournament brought out all of the big name players and also gave others
a chance to showcase their skills from the DC , MD and VA area's. We
enjoyed all of the competition and look forward to covering the
tournament again next year.
