Charlie Weber Hoop Fest Final On Saturday we saw big play from Durand Johnson Cecil Kirk 16's , Julian Dubose Blue Devils 16's and many of our area's younger players. The Blue Devils 16's never made it out of their pool and were eliminated with 2 losses in their first 3 games. Cecil Kirk 16's made it to the quarterfinals but lost as well. In the American Championship we witnessed DC Assault Blue 17's scrape out a very tough championship win against New Heights of N.Y. , which really could have went either way. The New Heights team played very well but in the end the kids from DC Assault were just too much winning 47-44 before a semi full crowd at Gallaudet field house in D.C. Things got really interesting when former DC Assault guard Austin Freeman currently at Georgetown University showed up to support his former team. He was pleased with their effort and said everything is going well at Georgetown. The biggest shocker of the tournament came when Philly Pride 16's rallied back from 14 points in the second half to knock off DC Assault 16's in the semis at Gallaudet. Chris Paul All Stars 17's easily won the District Championship 17's with big play from North Carolina Commit Reggie Bullock class of 2009 and Tashawn Marby who's top schools include UNC , Maryland and Clemson. Capitol Hoops will be there for the Charlie Weber Capital Invitational this weekend so stay tuned for more AAU action. |

Jordan Omogbehim |
CHARLIE WEBER REPORT DAY ONE: Considering the fact that this year's Charlie Weber Hoop Fest belonged to five different sites including American U , Howard U , Gallaudet U , St. Albans High & Archbishop Carroll High , we still managed to scrape out the talent in such a very confusing event. Some of the locations were on opposite ends of the city and with the traffic , it made for a very tough day not only for us , but for the players , coaches and spectators as well. With that said in our first game we witnessed a true 7 Footer Jordan Omogbehim only a freshman in the class of 2011 with the DC Blue Devils. Roy Hibbert is probably the closest comparison to Jordan who will play his high school ball with Stu Vetter and Montrose Christian in Rockville , MD next year. When Roy was 14 he was about 7'1" skinny and uncoordinated. Jordan has an NBA sized body already at age 14 , the kid is very strong. Where he lacks ability is running the court and foot coordination much like Hibbert in his younger days who is tremendously improved at Georgetown University and an upcoming lottery pick in the NBA draft. Though it is still very early who wouldn't want a shot at developing a 7 footer. |

Durand Johnson Class of 2010 |
I was very impressed with the play of sophomore guard Durand Johnson of Cecil Kirk AAU in Baltimore MD. The 6'4 shooting guard from Parkville High School in the class of 2010 helped his team to victory against Dujuan Wagner AAU scoring a game high 23 points. He is very poised , a silky type player with an ability spot up or take it to the rack. I was very impressed with the kid's attitude , the game was very physical and there were some tempers flaring from both squads but Durand kept his head in the game and remained cool scoring almost at will. Cecil Kirk 16 & under play with alot of heart and are a very physical team. We caught up with Durand's father after the game who said that Durand is getting college interest at this time , but mainly he and his son are focusing on developing his game and taking it to the next level. He also admitted that if there is an area that Durand could improve on it would probably be his ball handling , which looked very good on the court today. Durand is the type of player that we enjoy watching and will watch for another two and a half years. | |
