Take Your Best Shot 2009 Recap
Capitol Hoops Press
At the 2nd Annual DC Assault Take Your Best Shot
teams ages 14-17 from all over the east coast did just that , they took their
best shot in a period that was once heavily stampeded with Division I college
coaches of whom can now only observe prospects in July. But that didn't stop us
from spending the weekend amongst some of the elite in the country.
17&U Championship - Eric Atkins of DC Assault was phenomenal scoring
a game high 20pts in the championship win against the New England Playaz led by
Georgetown bound Nate Lubick who added 20pts in the loss. Atkins showed range
knocking down four 3pt shots and looked very much poised as a player who lists
the University of Massachusetts as his top school right now.
Josh Hairston DC Assault Gold - The Duke bound forward from DC
Assault looked showed of his fundamental , get the job done style throughout the
tourney. Hairston runs the floor extremely well and has a nice turn around
jumpshot out of the post. The 2009 recruit was the most versatile big man on the
court this weekend.
Two Available Senior Prospects - 6'5" Jamal
Olasewere of Mid-Atlantic Select and 6'5" Brandon Gibson of Baltimore Assault
are two prospects from the Class of 2009 that are yet to sign as of today. Both
are legit mid-major prospects , athletic and aggressive on the boards. Prep
school may be an option but both kids are impact players right now.
Antonio Barton Cecil Kirk
-
While
brother Will had a great showing at the Boo Williams , so did Antonio at the
Take Your Best Shot. Barton is a mid to high major point guard prospect that
likes to get his teammates involved.
Jonathan Arledge DC Assault White - Here is a kid
who's stock just keeps rising every time he takes the floor. The 6'9"
Arledge led his team in scoring all weekend showing good touch around the
basket. Arledge is not the most athletic of big-men but has a soft-touch around
the rim.
Note: Mid-Atlantic Select and
the Stafford Hoyas are two scrappy teams , that are up and coming. Select who
recently won a tourney in Philly last weekend made it to the semifinals before
losing to the New England Playaz. The Hoyas led by point guard Darius Smith gave
Assault Gold a run for their money losing in the final minutes.
16&U Champions DC Assault Gold - After
surviving a close call against Rich Soil early in the tournament , the Assault
Gold team led by Quinn Cook , Chris Martin and Jordan Goodman defeated their
younger counterpart Assault 15 Gold for the championship. Cook scored 15 points
in the first half and paced Assault to an early 30pt lead.
16&U Co MVP's - Chris Martin / Quinn Cook - Martin does not need much
space to create his shot , and when it drops he is the kind of guard that can
easliy give you 30+. Cook on the other hand is a efficient point guard with a
very good long ball. Cook come to play in big games and loves the spotlight.
Juanya Green Team Philly (right) - The Philly bred point guard was
dynamic this weekend scoring in a barrage of different manners. Green put up
26pts on day two and showed why the likes of Villlanova , UMD , Pitt , Temple
and Syracuse are all after the 2011 guard from Archbishop Carroll HS in
Philadelphia.
Maalic Kone DC Assault Blue - Kone is not a household name at this time ,
but will be if he continues to play the way he did. The 6'5" swingman is
extremely athletic and has a nice outside touch. Kone of DC Assault's Blue team
will attend Friendship Collegiate Academy next year.
Deon Andrews Triple Threat - Andrews is a 6'0" point guard
from St. Mary's Ryken capable of providing a big time punch from outside. The
2011 prospect is on the rise.
Tavon Sledge Rich Soil - Can you say a young
Nate Robinson? At 5'7" from the class of 2011 Sledge has major hops , is quick
and fearless attacking the basket.
15&U Team Melo Affair - Team Melo's 14
and 15 squads met in the championship game and although Tavon Saddler and the
14's were efficient the older Melo prevailed convincingly late in the game.
Shakir Brown Team Melo - Brown at 6'5" with a stroke from outside ,
and only in the class of 2012 seems as if the sky is the limit for the St.
Frances guard. Brown added 20pts in the championship win.
Lionel Greene Team Melo - The 6'2" shooting guard (right) from John
Carroll has a nice handle and is an explosive leaper.
Class of 2013 First Look Gonzaga's Incoming Class - Nate Britt Jr. , Kris
Jenkins and DJ Fenner are special. There is no other way to explain the talent
that Gonzaga College High School has coming their way in the Freshman class next
year. If these kids stick together for four years , there will be some
frustrated teams in the WCAC for years to come. More on these kids coming soon.
